ChanPoker Announces Closure

Chan Poker (chanpoker.com), the splashly online poker site fronted by 10-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Johnny Chan, has announced its closure effective August 21st. Chan Poker was most recently a member of the Ongame Network, anchored by well-known sites such as PokerRoom.com, but as with other sites on that network was closed to American play following the passage of the UIGEA in late 2006.

The Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) IX kicked off Wednesday night with a bang. Event #1, a $200+16 no-limit hold’em event with $1,000,000 guaranteed, drew 5,779 players for a total prize pool of $1,155,800 and a first-place prize of $199,398.62. Kahnawa:ke Gaming Commission Appoints Independent Investigator

The Kahnawa:ke Gaming Commission (KGC), which oversees numerous online poker sites using Kahnawa:ke-based Internet services in Canada, has released an official statement, announcing the appointment of an independent monitor to investigate Tokwiro Enterprises, parent company of both Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet. The appointment of Frank Catania, a former Director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, stems from the KGCʼs finding that individuals within both Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, had created and carried out a scheme to cheat players. The KGC’s complete findings and final decision in the Ultimate Bet case are still pending.

According to an article on Forbes.com, $24 Million in funds has been seized by the US government over the past six months, funds the feds claim are in bank accounts used to fund operations and make payments to US-based customers of Bodog. Court documents obtained by Forbes cite that the seizures began in January of this year, and have continued into this month.
